Adding a new theme can be done in at least 2 ways:
- Installation from WordPress.org Theme Directory
- Manual installation
1) Installation from the WordPress.org Theme Directory
In the https://wordpress.org/themes/ find free themes added by various developers. At the same time, you can find the same themes from the site’s administration panel, by going to the “Appearance -> Themes -> Add new theme” section.
Here you can see numerous themes ready to be installed and tested.
For each theme you have the possibility to “Preview” before installation.
Installation is done by pressing the “Install” button next to each theme.
After installing a theme, the possibility to activate it will be displayed immediately.
Immediate activation is not necessary, it can be done later.
You can install countless themes on the same WordPress, but only one can be active.
After installing several themes, you can check which one suits you best by going to “Appearance -> Themes”. From here you can activate the desired theme, but also the possibility to preview it beforehand.
2) Manual installation
To manually install a theme, you must first obtain its archive.
Uploading the archive can be done directly from the site’s administration panel, but also via FTP.
Uploading the archive from the administration panel is done from “Appearance -> Themes -> Add new theme -> Load theme”.
Afterwards, you must indicate the path to the theme archive that you want to be loaded.
After pressing the “Install now” button, the new theme will be available in the theme area “Appearance -> Themes”, from where it can be activated.
If you encountered problems loading the theme archive from the administration panel, you can use the FTP version.
To be able to upload the theme via FTP, you must initially have the access credentials.
Before loading the theme, it must be unzipped, because we will no longer load the archive but the directories and files of the theme. You can use WinRAR for unzipping.
Uploading the new theme via FTP is done in the “wp-content\themes” directory.
As in the previous case, after loading the theme, go to “Appearance -> Themes”, from where you can manage the installation of the theme.
